What does it mean to study an accredited course? Accreditation shows that the course has been authorised by an official body like the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Always check if the qualification is an accredited course. Skills Academy is a college that offers a range of accredited courses, short courses, professional institute courses and provider programmes.
What Does Accreditation Mean to you?
Accreditation means that you will study a course that meets industry standards and quality requirements of South Africa. The course has also been authorised by SAQA or the government and is in-line with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Should a Training Institution be Accredited?
If you want potential employers to recognise your qualification, then yes, it is a good idea that the institution is accredited. A training institution needs to go through a process before it gets its accreditation.
When a training institution is inspected, the accrediting body looks at the ability of the training institution to offer the course. This means they look at the structures, venues, study materials, financial health, tax status and BEE status, as part of the accreditation process. Skills Academy has passed these and all the other accreditation requirements in full.
Department of Higher Education and Training Registration
The Further Education and Training Colleges Act (Act 16 of 2006) says that providers of education have to register with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). They need to do this if they intend to offer National Qualifications (qualifications registered with NQF) that have an NQF level of 2, 3 or 4.
Skills Academy has applied for registration, and we are awaiting the outcome from the DHET. We have received an acknowledgement of receipt of our application from the DHET. You can view the letter here.
DHET Issued a List of Private Education Institution that has Lodged Application to be Registered With DHET
In April 2018, the DHET issued this list, where you can find us here. Look for us under “Home Study Group (Pty) Ltd”, which is the formal company name in which Skills Academy lives. Here is our entry into the list.
