From Vision to Reality (2009)

Skills Academy’s story began with a simple belief: it is never too late to change your life through education.

In 2009, serial edupreneur Jan Badenhorst started Skills Academy. He had worked in distance learning for almost twenty years. At that time, Jan was running SA College of Home Study (College SA).

He saw that many people could not finish school. Some had to leave because life was hard. Others could not afford to study. Jan wanted a college that focused on skills courses. These courses would help people quickly find work or improve their jobs, even if they did not have Matric.

Skills Academy began as a skills-focused part of College SA. It was made to help students gain practical skills and knowledge without difficult entry requirements.

From the start, Skills Academy was for students who thought they had lost their chance. People who work hard every day. People who care for their families and still dream of getting qualifications that open doors. Jan believed that everyone deserves a fair chance to study and have a better life.

“We believe anyone can study and succeed, no matter where they start,” says Jan. “If life stopped you before, here is a second chance.”

Skills Academy did not just want to offer courses. We wanted to remove the things that make people feel they cannot study. We built our college to fit real life.

Even if you did not finish school, you can still study at Skills Academy. Many of our courses only need Grade 9, and some do not need any school results. We believe everyone deserves the chance to learn.

Once you register, your study materials arrive quickly so you can start learning right away. You can choose how you want your materials. Many students choose to study fully online and get their materials by email within 36 hours. But if you prefer, you can also ask for printed books to be delivered to your door. You decide what works best for you.

You can read your study materials on your phone, tablet, or computer. This makes it easy to study at home, during work breaks, or anywhere that suits you.

We know money is tight. Instead of big payments all at once, you pay each month while you study. If you finish your course faster, you pay less overall. This helps you save money.

We do not check your credit record. We will never blacklist you if you miss a payment. Everyone deserves a chance to study without fear.

Skills Academy offers caring tutor support. Our tutors help you understand your work and give you feedback on your assignments. You can talk to them by email, WhatsApp, and sometimes in Telegram groups, depending on your course. You also get guidance on how to plan your studies. Many of our staff have studied through distance learning themselves. We understand how hard—but how worthwhile—this journey can be.
