It’s the 21st century – people today have a lot more responsibilities than they used to. So if you’re thinking, “How can I continue my studies when I have other responsibilities?” on a daily basis, don’t worry! We’ve assembled some tips to help you succeed.
How to Manage Studying and Working
Managing university/college and working can be a nerve-wracking thing to do. It may feel like there’s no time for yourself or for your friends, but that’s all wrong! By managing your time properly, there can be enough time for family, friends, and relaxation. By making note of all the things that you have to do, you can easily make time for other things.
Jot it Down
Planning ahead in university will help you get your work done more efficiently. Every shift you’ve been given at work, every assignment due – make note of all of it. This can also help if you have a heavy workload and an assignment due soon This way you can finish both on time.
Talk to Your Tutors
By letting your tutor know that you have a job, they’ll be more understanding when it comes to your struggles. Telling a tutor will not lighten your workload, but they’ll understand that you could be struggling and they will give you advice on how to cope.
Don’t Overwhelm Yourself
You’ll find it hard to juggle extra shifts when working with your exams. Don’t try to take extra classes for extra credit if you’re working multiple hours a day. It won’t be worth it. Your free time is just as important.
Treat Yourself
With the stress of managing both work and studying, it can be hard to remember you also deserve some time off. University can be hard work and as a matter of fact, so can your job. So take some well deserved time off with your favorite episode, exploring or hanging out with friends.
Goals, Goals, Goals
If you want to succeed at university, goals are the way to go – obviously. Setting yourself some goals are a good way to stay motivated. You want to keep yourself in a position where neither your job or your studying suffers.
Tips for When the Stress Piles up
Feeling very stressed? Instead of just ignoring that knot in your tummy, try one of the following tips to lower your stress levels:
- Exercise
- Avoid distractions
- Rest well
- Ask for help when you need it
Keep Your Job and Degree Related
While this may sound pretty obvious, it’s actually harder said than done. You’ll definitely benefit a lot more from having a job and degree that are similar. Another benefit will be that you won’t have to worry too much about managing your time effectively, as you’ll be learning on the job.
Not Sure What You Want to Study?
It’s fine if you don’t know what you want to study yet! Feeling uncertain is nothing to feel bad about.
