Are you ready to kickstart your studies with an exemption? Then make sure you have all the documents needed for ICB recognition of prior learning to get started.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Have you completed a related qualification? Or gained relevant work experience? Well then you could qualify for an ICB exemption. The ICB will give you credits for subjects you’ve passed in your previous studies. When the ICB agrees that you are competent in certain areas, use those credits to move forward in your course.
Documents Needed for ICB Recognition of Prior Learning
The ICB exemption board needs to approve your application. But to apply, you need to have all the documents ready for submission. Remember, before you can apply, you first need to register as an ICB student and have an ICB student number. The documents needed for ICB recognition of prior learning include:
- Copy of your previous course results/ transcripts
- Certified copy of your ID
- Detailed CV listing relevant work experience (if applicable)
- Completed online application form
- Proof of payment deposit slip
- Letter from your manager that confirms your relevant work experience

NQF Registered Qualification
Your qualification needs to be NQF registered. This means that you have an accredited certificate and meets national standards. Along with your documents, you also need to submit:
- Proof of the training providers accreditation
- NQF level
- SAQA qualification registration number
Qualification Obtained Within the Last 5 Years
You need to ensure that you received your qualification within the last five years. This will help you meet the latest SAQA requirements. It proves you have the updated skills you want to get credits for. But if your qualification is older than five years, you must have relevant and current work experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
The NQF (National Qualifications Framework) can give you credit for what you already know and can do. If you have work experience or training that matches what you’re studying now, you might get some of your current course requirements waived. This means you don’t have to repeat things you’ve already learned, making it easier to finish your qualification faster.
Once you submit your Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application, it usually takes up to six weeks for the ICB to review it. They will check all your documents and let you know if you’ve earned any exemptions. Make sure you submit everything on time so there are no delays in the process.
To qualify for RPL, your previous learning or work experience must match the skills and knowledge needed for the course you’re doing. You’ll need to show proof of your past qualifications or work experience, and ICB will decide if it’s enough to skip some parts of your course.
ICB suggests that your qualifications should be no older than five years to be considered for RPL. If your qualifications are older than that, you can still apply if you can prove you’ve been working in a related field. This helps make sure the skills you already have are still up to date.
