As you settle into the work-from-home lifestyle, you need to be aware of the top skills needed for remote work. These skills can make or break your career, so be sure to spend a good amount of time trying to perfect them.

Computer Savvy

In between Zoom meetings and collaborating with your coworkers in a Google doc, you need to keep your computer skills up-to-date. You don’t have to be an expert, but you should always be confident and willing to try out new software. 

Communication

Your written and verbal communication skills need to be effective so that your team can be productive. When you speak to them via phone calls or send emails, make sure that you are clear about what you need or if you’re confused about anything. 

Team Work

Just because you won’t be in an office every day, doesn’t mean you’ll be working alone. It takes a whole team of people for a company to be successful. Teamwork includes people skills such as conflict resolution, respect and being willing to listen to your colleagues.  

Independence

You should be able to work well with others and by yourself. This means taking initiative and starting the day without relying on small talk or waiting for instructions. Extroverts may then find that their home office is very lonely. If you are not prepared to spend entire workdays alone, then perhaps remote work is not the place for you. 

Self-Motivation

When you’re working from home, your managers won’t be around to watch you closely. However, you still have the same deadlines to reach. Self-motivation is key to completing your tasks. This means you need to create your own work schedule and have good time management skills.
