First aid is the first response to a suddenly sick or injured person. This is the initial impulsive care we innately provide to people who are in need of it. It is performed as soon as possible after the incident and is often performed long before the arrival of an ambulance.
First aiders are the first line of defence against injuries and sickness and are needed in any business. Although you will commonly deal with minor injuries in the workplace or home, it is important that you are prepared for any medical incident. The response of the first aider could sometimes mean the difference between life and death. You are in full control of any medical situation until the ambulance arrives.
The main aims of first aid are:
- Preserve life.
- Protect the casualty from further harm.
- Provide pain relief.
- Prevent the injury or illness from becoming worse.
- Provide reassurance.
- Promote a speedy recovery.
