Colleges

We’ve all heard people wondering if they will be enrolling to a university or a college. Or wondering what is the difference between the two. Are you one of the people who want to know what exactly colleges are? Rest assured. All your questions will be answered in this article and your worries eased.

What are Colleges?

Colleges are parts of educational institutions. They are a place where students enrol to either to gain higher education, obtain diplomas or certifications. In most cases in South Africa, colleges provide learners with workplace-ready skills.

This means that they are often technical, providing training that is specialised for a particular field or role. For example, Legal Assistance Courses would provide you with the skills you need to be a successful legal assistant.

It is important that when you enrol for a college, you check that it is not a bogus college that is not registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Registering with an non accredited college will result in your qualification being invalid and unusable. You wouldn’t want to waste your money and time like that.

Choosing a College

There are a few things you need to look at and consider when choosing a college. As we have mentioned above, one of these things may be whether or not you want to go to a public college or a private one.

Below is a list of the things you need to consider when choosing a college:

  • The most important part is whether or not the college is registered and accredited to offer the course you wish to take.
  • How do they offer their classes and how do you wish to get your education? Do you want distance learning, face to face or online?
  • How is college going to be beneficial to you? You need to dig deep, check if they have any positive benefits that will be good for your education and overall livelihood such as what happens if you can’t pay or availability of assistance.

Is it Better to go to Public or Private College?

The answer to this question depends on your preference. And mostly your pockets. Private colleges tend to be more expensive than public colleges. In terms of the quality of education, there really is no difference. Both these colleges can offer great quality education.

They can offer their services either via

  • A combination of distance learning and face to face. Here students do most of their learning from their homes and attend classes maybe once or twice a week for a few hours.
