Can you Rewrite Matric?
Yes, you can. There are two categories for rewriting your matric. Each has its own set of requirements.
The National Senior Certificate (matric) exams are for learners that have just matriculated.
Adult matric is for people that are 21 years and older who want to complete or better their matric results.
Matric 2019 Rewrites -When do I Write Matric Exams?
Save the date! All supplementary exams are written in May and June, giving you enough time to prepare yourself. We will allocate you with a venue closest to you and will assist you with your exam registration.
Who can Write the Exams?
We offer you two programs to achieve your matric certificate. If you have completed you matric and you weren’t happy with your results, you can improve them with our matric upgrade program. If you are an adult that never wrote matric, then our adult matric program is for you.
How to Apply for the 2020 NSC Supplementary Exams
If you aren’t happy with your results or were unable to write your exams, you can apply for a supplementary exam. Applications for the 2020 NSC supplementary Exams will close on the 31 January 2020.
How to apply:
- Contact the department of education OR
- Fill out an online application
- Attach supporting documents to your application (doctor’s certificate, death certificate, motivational letter stating why you should rewrite).
Register as soon as you get your results and avoid the stress of last minute applications.
Second Chance Programme
The second chance programme offers learners who didn’t achieve their matric, an opportunity at meeting the requirements of the National Senior Certificate and obtaining their matric certificate. This is done by focusing on subjects that can contribute to job opportunities.

What are the Pass Requirements?
When you register to rewrite you’ll need a minimum of six subjects. Two official languages, one language being a home language and the other being a first additional language.
Keep in mind when choosing your subjects, they can’t have a practical component.
Subject Pass Requirements
- You need 40% in three subjects, one being your home language
- 30% in two other subjects, one being your first additional language
- 20% in your final exam
Will my Previous Credits Count?
Why rewrite all your subjects when you can just use your previous credits earned? If you want to combine your credits with your new results, all you have to do is apply for a replacement certificate: change of status, with the department of education. Your credits won’t automatically change unless you wrote a supplementary exam. Even if you wrote your matric years ago, this applies to you.
