The Covid-19 virus is part of the coronavirus family that made the jump from animals to humans in December 2019. It originated in the Chinese City of Wuhan. The virus causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious respiratory diseases.
Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others.

How Does the Virus Spread?
The virus is spread mostly from person-to-person but can also be spread by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces. Find out more below.
Person-to-Person
People who are in close contact with each other can pass it along through respiratory droplets. This is produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or inhaled into the lungs.
Contact With Contaminated Surfaces
A person can get the Covid-19 virus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching their own mouth, nose or even their eyes. It’s important to try and remember to avoid touching your face if your hands are not clean.
What are the Symptoms?
The most common symptoms of the Coronavirus includes the following:
- Fever
- Dry cough
- Tiredness
- Shortness of breath
Some patients experience other symptoms such as:
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Aches and pains
- Diarrhea
When and Where Should I get Tested?
According to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), you should only get tested if you have the symptoms and did any of the following:
- Been in contact with someone who has Covid-19
- Travelled to a high risk country such as China, South Korea or Italy.
- Worked in or been to a healthcare facility that is treating patients who have the virus
- Have a severe case of pneumonia with an unknown cause
If you think you might have the virus, you should contact the NICD helpline on 0800 029 999 and they will advise you on where the nearest facility is so you can go and get tested.

How can I Protect Myself?
You can protect yourself by doing the following:
- Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds by using soap and water.
- Use hand sanitiser and cover all surfaces of your hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
How can I Protect Others?
You can protect others by doing the things below:
- Stay home if you are sick
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or the inside of your elbow.
- Clean and disinfect commonly used areas and surfaces frequently. This includes tables, doorknobs and keyboards.
