Ways to Deal With Academic Burnout

Being a student isn’t easy. The stress that comes with it can make you feel like you can’t cope. Luckily, there are ways to deal with academic burnout.

We’ve all been through it. The endless tests, exams, and assignments on top of other personal responsibilities. It can be very overwhelming and leave you with a lack of motivation. But we’re here to help you out. Here are some ways to deal with academic burnout.

Ways to Deal With Academic Burnout

Burnout has many symptoms that go far beyond not being in the mood to do assignments or go to class. It is important to recognise them so you can get help as soon as possible. Some of them include:

  • Struggling to focus
  • Irritability
  • Losing confidence in your academic ability
  • Lack of creativity
  • Exhaustion no matter how much you sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Not being able to meet deadlines
  • Headaches and sore muscles

There are many ways to deal with academic burnout. But the first step is to be willing to change your current habits for the better. Let’s explore some more tips below:

Take Breaks

Not only should you take study breaks, you should also take breaks from your phone and social media. The digital age has made us available to others 24/7, which is not always a good thing. It could cause you to lose valuable time you should be using to focus on your studies.

Talk to Someone

This could be your lecturer or tutor. If the issue is that you’re struggling to understand the coursework, they can help you out. If your burnout goes beyond your studies, then your tutor can guide you to someone who can help you manage your mental health.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Many students compare their marks to others. And if they didn’t do as well as their friends, they place a lot of pressure on themselves to work harder. If this is you, you should stop. It’s important to focus on your own journey. You aren’t a failure for getting a lower mark.

Take Care of Your Health

You probably knew this tip was coming, right? But it’s a very important step. You should try to get enough sleep, exercise and eat healthy meals. Failing to take care of your body means that burnout symptoms have the chance to make you sick.

Make Time to be Social

Spend time with your friends. Even if it’s just a video call or a quick coffee date. Having something social to look forward to might motivate you to finish your coursework sooner. Being with friends will also help take your mind off your stressful studies for a while.

Switch up Your Study Spots

If you’re experiencing academic burnout, your usual study venue can end up being a source of anxiety. Try studying somewhere else, such as a library or even outside in a park if the weather is good. Make sure to be realistic about your new environment. Don’t choose a place where you know you’ll be easily distracted.

Avoid Procrastination

This is a tough one, but procrastination leaves you with very little time to complete your work. This increases your stress levels. So you should try to find ways to avoid procrastination and focus on studying.
