Tips When Writing Assignments

As a student you can expect to write a lot of assignments from the beginning of your course until it ends. It is therefore super important to improve this skill so that you can deliver quality work and impress your readers.

Useful Tips When Writing Assignments

Writing good assignments helps you to score better marks and improve your ability to do research. Follow these tips when writing assignments and boost your writing skills.

Plan Your Work

Planning is the first step to writing your assignment. It will help you to be clear and sure about the topic you are writing about. When you plan, you avoid piling up your assignment with useless information and making it too long. You will also get a better understanding of the topic which will help you to score better marks. Planning also helps you to determine how much time you will require to complete your assignment.

To plan, you can use diagrams such as mind-maps, flow charts or write out a list of items you will include in your essay.

Set a Time Frame

Assignments come with due dates and it is important to meet your deadline. Failing to submit your assignment on time could result in it not being marked by your lecturer or you may score a lower mark. Set a time to complete your assignment before the due date. This will help you to check for any mistakes and make improvements if you need to.

Setting a time frame will help you to decide how long you will need to finish your assignment. If you know that you may need more time  to write your assignment, then you can start as early as possible. Avoid feeling stressed and rushing through writing your assignment so that you can do your best.

You can also give your assignment to a friend or classmate to read through it. They can check for any spelling mistakes and to advise you on how to make it sound better.

Do Research

When doing your research, try to only use academic sources. These sources can be found in books, textbooks, journals or websites. It is important to use these sources because they are written by people who are qualified to provide the information. Sources like Wikipedia, can be edited by anyone and can sometimes include false information.

If your assignment does not require that you use academic sources, then you can find information in magazines, newspaper articles or even Youtube. Just ensure that you can prove where you got the information from.

The Writing Process

Once you have completed your planning, you will need to start writing your assignment. This part of your assignment can be confusing and take more time because it is the longest to do.

Breaking up your assignment into sections will make the writing process easier. Your assignment begins with an introduction, then a body and finally the conclusion. Make sure you apply the rules for each part.

The Introduction

This is the first part of your assignment. Here, you will introduce the reader to your topic. When you write your introduction, you want to capture your reader’s attention and make them want to read more.

You can do this by giving them a short background on the topic. The background can include the historical facts or any interesting quotes that relate to the topic. You want an introduction to be short and get to the point quickly so that the reader knows what to expect in the body.

The Body

The body is the longest part of your assignment. It is where the reader gets information about the topic. Breaking down your body into paragraphs is important as you want to avoid  readers getting bored when reading long pieces of information.

In your body you can include 2 to 3 paragraphs, depending on how long your assignment is. Make sure that your paragraphs link to each other by using “joining words” like however, therefore, in addition to, etc. This will help you to make sure the information in your body flows well into each other.

Conclusion

This is the end of your assignment. Here, you check whether you have summed up everything you mentioned in your introduction. You want to keep this part short and sweet but also ensure you end off strongly. A good conclusion convinces the reader that you have made good points in your assignment.

Editing

Edit as much as you can! After you finish writing your assignment, you will need to make sure that it is perfect. Edit to check if you have made any spelling mistakes, or if all you have included all the important information. You can also read your piece out loud to check if you have used the right tone.

Once you have completed your assignment, check to see if you have followed all the steps in your planning. With these tips, you can be confident that you will get those golden marks you dream of.
