What is a Matric Rewrite?
Supplementary exams (second chance exams) are for students who did not meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC). These students have the opportunity to rewrite the exams they failed in order to pass and receive their matric certificate. These exams are also for those who did not fare well during their final exams and would like to improve their results in order to study further.
Students are able to write these exams during the May-June supplementary examinations and rewrite as many subjects as they like, if they meet the requirements.
Matric Rewrite Requirements
Now that you have your results, you are able to see if you qualify for a matric rewrite. In order to rewrite, you need to meet the requirements of this exam. Below are some of the requirements:
- You have written the matric final exam the previous year
- Have written the exam but did not meet the requirements of the NSC and SC
- If you were unable to write certain subjects and have a valid reason, such as medical issues, or death in your immediate family, etc.
- If you would like to improve your pass mark, e.g from certificate to a bachelors pass
Pass Levels
There are 3 pass levels obtained after receiving your matric results. These levels are:
Bachelor Pass
Bachelor’s pass is the highest level passed in the matric final exam. With this pass, you are able to study at any higher learning institution, if you meet their course requirements. Below are the requirements for Bachelors Pass.
- Got at least 40% for your Home Language
- At least 50% for four other High Credit subjects
- Obtained at least 30% for two other subjects
Diploma Pass
With a Diploma pass, you can register to any technikon and colleges of your choice, and enrol into a diploma or national diploma course. Requirements for this pass are as follows:
- Must get at least 40% for your Home Language.
- Have at least 40% for three other High Credit subjects (Four, including your home language.).
- Get at least 30% for two other subjects.
Certificate Pass
With a certificate pass, your study options are much more limited than the other two pass levels. You will be able to enrol to colleges and complete a certificate. You can also apply for a National Certificate course and work your way up to a National Diploma. For a certificate pass, you need:
- 40% in your Home Language.
- at least 40% in two other subjects.
- at least 30% for three other subjects.
Preparing for Your Exam Rewrite
Now that you qualify for an exam rewrite and know what the pass levels are, you can start preparing for your exam. Below are some study tips which can help you pass your exam rewrite.
Plan your schedule – Use a calendar to keep track of the things you have studied, giving yourself ample days to prepare for a subject. This allows you to prioritise which subjects to focus on first, and what subjects you need to pay more attention to.
Get enough sleep – You won’t be able to concentrate on your work if you are too tired. With a balanced diet and enough sleep, you will be able to ace your exams.
Study now, party later – We all want to have a good time, but it’s best not to take any chances when rewriting matric. Don’t let this second chance go to waste. Prioritise your studies, and you will have all the time to celebrate after achieving your matric certificate.
Take a break from social media – Social media can become a distraction when you are trying to study. Take a break from your phone and focus on your books. You will be rewarded greatly in the end.
Get all your study material ready – From old exam papers to textbooks and old notes, make sure you have all the study material you need which will help you pass. Wanna try a different form of studying? Why not watch videos on your subjects and topics? It serves as a break from the books and allows you to retain the information even better.

Matric Upgrade
If you aren’t happy with your final exam marks, you can register for our Matric Upgrade programme. Here you have the opportunity to rewrite the subjects you want to improve, allowing you to receive a better pass mark. If you would like to study further, but do not meet the requirements of the course you would like to enrol to, then you can choose this course. It also allows you to rewrite as many subjects as you want.
Adult Matric
We all want to achieve our matric certificate. However, sometimes we are faced with issues that stop us from even reaching grade 12. If you dropped out of high school but would like to complete your matric, then choose Adult Matric. This programme allows those who did not have the opportunity to reach or complete matric. Here you have an opportunity to choose subjects that will help you further your education, giving you a chance to study further and have a successful career.

Getting your matric certificate is very important, as it allows for many more opportunities.
