What are my Options as an Adult Learner?
Getting your matric as an adult doesn’t have to be a complicated process. You have options available to you. So, there really is no excuse to not get your matric. Even if you don’t have a grade 9, you can still get it before you work towards a matric certificate.
Adult Basic Education Training (ABET)
Adult Basic Education and Training is available to adults who want to finish their basic education. It aims to provide learning tools, knowledge and skills to it’s participants, as well as a recognised qualification.
Is ABET level 4 the same as Matric?
No, it is not. The ABET level 4 is a qualification registered at a level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework. This is comparable to Grade 9. Passing this qualification gives you entrance to write your matric exams as an adult.
Amended Senior Certificate (ASC)
With your ABET Level 4 or Grade 9, you can enroll to work towards your matric certificate. To qualify, you need to be 21 years or older and have one of the following:
- Passed the GETC: ABET Level 4 or Grade 9
- A recognised NQF level 1 with 2 official languages
- An incomplete senior certificate
- An incomplete NSC and whose School-based assessment component has expired

What are the Pass Requirements?
It’s important to know what you need to do in order to pass your matric exams. That way you will know exactly what is expected of you before you start your studies.
Firstly, you need to register for a minimum of six subjects:
- Two must be official languages
- One at Home Language Level, the other as a First Additional Language
Secondly, you need to pass at least 5 subjects by getting:
- 40% in three subjects, including Home Language
- 30% in another two subjects, one must be a First Additional Language
- A sub-minimum of 20% in the final exams
What is the Exam Registration Process?
Registration for the matric exams can be done online or at any education district office. This must be done between October and January.
What do I Need to Register?
Before you register, you need to make sure that you have the proper documents. This includes the following:
- a certified copy of your previous results
- a certified copy of your ID or passport
- proof of residence
How do I Register?
If you are studying on your own, you will need to register online at your provincial education department. If you choose to study with us, we will help you with the registration process.
When do I Write?
The exam period usually takes place in May/June every year. You can get all examination dates on the Department of Basic Education’s website. The exact dates you will write depends on the subjects you have chosen.

Once you have successfully completed your exams and received your certificate, you can study further. Your matric certificate gives you the option of studying either accredited or skills-based courses. Do your research before you decide which field you would like to go in.
