How do I Become a Forensic Scientist in South Africa?
Our country offers many ways to work in the field of forensics. You first need to decide what type of forensics job you want to pursue. From forensic biology to forensic psychology, the options are yours. Here’s how you can get your career started:
School Subjects
To be good at forensics, you should preferably have studied Life Sciences, pure Maths, and Physical Science in high school. This is because the field combines all three subjects to investigate crimes.
Tertiary Studies
If you’ve completed matric, you have to study a Bachelor of Science (Bsc) degree at a university, and then complete a postgraduate qualification in Forensics. There are only a few institutions that offer this, so make sure to do good research. You can also do a National Certificate (NQF Level 5) in Forensics.
Work Experience
If you have work experience in fields such as biology, pathology, chemistry or even psychology, you can do an accredited forensic science course. This will take your career to the next level as you gain new crime-solving skills. You’ll use the knowledge from your previous qualification and apply it to forensics.
Our Courses
Our Forensic Science Courses don’t require matric. These are provider programmes, meaning that you learn practical skills to add to your CV. This course will not qualify you to become a forensic scientist, but is rather a great add-on if you work in a related field, like policing. It’s also perfect if you are looking to learn more about the field before pursuing full-time studies.
