The highlight of your ICB Course is the exam. You’ll be able to put your accounting knowledge and skills to the test. Before you take your seat at the exam, find out which setting works best for you. Not sure which one to choose? Take a look at the difference between the ICB paper-based and online exam.

ICB Paper-Based and Online Exam: What’s the Difference?
Not all ICB students are close to the exam centre or have the technical requirements at home. So to ensure you get the best results, there are a few exam settings you can choose from. To pick the right option for you, make sure you know the difference between ICB paper-based and online exams.
ICB Paper-Based Exams
You have the option to write your exam at your college, or an exam centre approved by the ICB. You’ll get your exam paper from the invigilator, who will supervise the exam. You can write your paper-based exam between 09:00 and 12:30.
Paper-based Exam Rules
When writing at the exam venue, there are strict rules you need to follow.
- Make sure you get to the exam centre early. If you arrive there after 09:30, you will not be allowed to write.
- You can only enter the exam with an official ID card, temporary or green-barcoded ID book or passport.
ICB Online Exams
Students who choose the online exam option have the freedom to choose where they would like to write. Whether it’s at home or a location that follows the technical requirements.
You can start these exams any time between 09:00 and 13:00 on exam day. But, remember that all online exams will automatically close at 16:30 so make sure you finish before then.
Technical Requirements
To avoid any issues during the exam, make sure that you follow all the technical requirements.
- Complete a technical systems check before you write
- Use a stable internet connection
- You should use Google Chrome
- If you log in ahead of time, refresh your browser at 13:00
Technical Support
We are with you every step of the way. And so is the ICB technical support team. During the exam, they will be on-standby to help you with any technical issue you may experience. There is also a chat hotline available to you. Or you can pop them an email.
Similarities Between Paper-based and Online Exam
Along with the differences between paper-based and online exams, there are also similarities. The most important similarity being the submission of your Portfolio of Evidence (PoE). You need to submit your PoE one week before the exam. Without your PoE, you will not be able to write either exam. Listed below are other similarities. Both:
- The paper-based and online exam are three and half hours long
- Exams are invigilated
- Follow the same style of the questions – quiz and extended writing
- Exam dates can be found on the timetable

Skills Academy is the word support in every way.

Frequently Asked Questions
The pass mark for the ICB exam is 50%. This means you need to score at least half of the total marks to pass the exam. Achieving this mark ensures that you can move forward with your studies and earn your qualification.
An online exam is a test that you take over the internet, usually from your home or another quiet place. Instead of going to an exam centre, you use your computer and a stable internet connection to write your exam. Online exams often have rules to make sure everything is fair, like using a camera to monitor you while you write.
If you fail an ICB exam, you can rewrite it. You will need to register and pay for the rewrite opportunity. It is important to use this time to study hard so you can pass and continue your course without delays.
During an online exam, you must contact ICB through their online chat support or email if you have a problem. These services are available to help you with technical issues or questions about the exam. Make sure you follow their instructions carefully to avoid delays in your exam process.
No, you cannot study directly with ICB. They are an examination body and do not offer teaching or course material directly to students. You must enrol with an approved ICB training provider, like Skills Academy, to study the course material and prepare for the exams.
