Congratulations! After a long application process, you’ve finally secured a job interview. But the recruiters have informed you that you won’t be having a one-on-one interview. Is it time to panic? No it’s not, because we’ll tell you exactly how to prepare for a panel job interview.
How to Prepare for a Panel Job Interview
A panel interview is when one candidate is interviewed by a group of people. Many companies prefer this method. They want to see how you interact with different people in the department. It speeds up the hiring process because all the decision-makers set aside time to interview the candidates together. This setup can be intimidating no matter the reason. So here are our top tips on how to prepare for a panel job interview.
Research the Interviewers
Learning more about your interviewers will ease your anxiety. It will help you get an idea of what each person on the panel will be paying attention to. Applying for a job in accounting? Then assume you’ll be interviewed by HR and the accounting managers. Some companies have names and pictures of their management teams on the website. If not, check them out on LinkedIn.
Learn Everyone’s Names
We admit that this is difficult to do when you’re nervous but it will really be worthwhile. Make use of the panel’s names by saying things like: “That’s an excellent question, Diana. I believe that…”. Approaching questions in this way will make the interviewers feel included and catered to. It also proves that you’re an active listener.
Be Prepared With Your Resources
If you’re being interviewed by five people, make sure you have five copies of your CV, cover letter or portfolio available. It is also a good idea to bring extras along with you. There is nothing more embarrassing than asking your interviewers to share resources.
Stay Mindful of Your Body Language
While you are answering questions, all eyes will be on you. No, we’re not saying this to make you panic. Body language makes an impression too. Fidgeting or slouching in your chair will make you look uninterested in the interview. So be sure to sit up straight, uncross your arms and look everyone in the eye, especially the one who asked the question.
Prepare Possible Questions
This includes general interview questions as well as career-specific ones. “Tell us about yourself” seems like a simple question, but can you answer it in a professional way? You should also prepare a few questions to ask the interviewers. This shows that you are serious about getting the job.
Be Patient
Some panel interviews are more organised than others. So it is possible that different people could end up asking you the same question. It’s important that you don’t get visibly frustrated. Rephrase your answers and use this as a chance to give more details.
Remember That Equality is Key
Don’t play favourites. Remember to treat the whole panel equally and engage with all the interviewers. Despite your best guesses, you don’t know who will have the most say about whether you get hired or not. So be sure to answer everyone’s questions fully and earnestly.
