It’s that time of year again where thousands of matriculants are anxiously awaiting their results. If your results are not what you wanted, it’s not the end of the road. You have many options. Here’s our advice on how to deal with poor matric results.
How to Deal With Poor Matric Results
Everyone places a lot of emphasis on matric. So it’s easy to feel as if your self-worth is attached to the marks on your NSC certificate. Remember that you’re more than your academics. We’ll show you how to deal with poor matric results, so you can pick yourself up and prepare for the next chapter of your life.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
Feeling angry, sad, worried or disappointed is completely normal. And it’s especially difficult when your friends are celebrating. Give yourself a chance to recover. Speak to a friend or family member and voice your emotions.
Self-Care
It’s very important to be kind to yourself during this time. Taking care of your wellbeing will really help you cope with those negative feelings. Try exercising, eating healthy and getting eight hours of sleep. Having a self-care routine will improve your mood.
Do Something Fun
To take your mind off your worries, you should do something you enjoy. It may not feel like it, but you deserve to have fun. Have a movie night with your friends, go ice-skating or have a picnic in the park.
Introspection
This is a challenging task because you have to be honest with yourself. Introspection means you have to think about the type of person you are, and what you want from life. Maybe studying isn’t your thing and that’s okay. You can still be successful.
Weigh Your Options
The world is your oyster, and there isn’t only one recipe for success. Don’t let this minor setback be the be-all and end-all. With the options below, you’ll see that a second chance is just waiting for you to take it.
- Exam re-mark/re-check – If you suspect that a mistake was made when your exam scripts were marked, this is the route you need to take.
- Study Without Matric – With us, there are many courses you can do without matric. You can use them to expand your skills and get an entry-level job.
- Matric Upgrade – If you didn’t get the marks you needed to study a specific course, you can opt for a matric upgrade. This allows you to redo the subjects you want better marks in.
- Matric Rewrite – This option is for those who failed to meet the NSC pass requirements.
Please note: The differences between the Matric Upgrade and Matric Rewrite can be confusing. Make sure you understand which option is best for you.
Ask for Help
If your feelings of disappointment and anxiety are overwhelming, consider getting professional help. There are many organisations who offer free counselling to those who need it. You don’t have to suffer in silence.
Skills Academy is the word support in every way.
