How do I Become a Preschool Teacher?
Some people are naturally good with children. Even so, you will need to study if you want to become a preschool teacher. Every parent wants to know that their child is getting the best possible care when someone else is looking after them. We’ve all heard tales of daycare staff not having the right qualifications and then bad things happen. To avoid this, an Educare qualification is the way to go.
What is Educare?
Educare is a special part of education that will teach you all you need to know about teaching children before they start school. The tools you will learn will enable you to have a huge impact on a child’s development during their early years. These tools include:
- Language skills
- First aid and
- What to do in an emergency.
There are many companies and places in South Africa where you can do Educare courses, classes, certificates, diplomas, or degrees. Another option is specialising in Special Education which will equip you with the tools to teach children who have special needs due to mental or physical disabilities.
I Can’t Afford the Time or Money to study at a University. Can I Still Study?
Luckily there are many companies that offer distance learning courses in Educare. One of these companies is Skills Academy. Studying through distance learning means that you are in charge of your own studies. That means you study where, when and how you want. It can be difficult to study while you work but with distance learning, it is much easier. It is also much cheaper than studying at a university.
How Much Can I Earn?
Due to the fact that there are so many different Educare jobs, the salaries are also different.
PayScale states that the average yearly salary for a preschool teacher is about R85 000 while a preschool teacher who does special education can earn about R119 000 per year.
Note these numbers are correct at the time of writing.
How Much Will it Cost to Study Educare?
The cost of studying depends on where you study. Skills Academy allows you to do the N4, N5, and N6 certificates and as mentioned before, studying through distance learning is cheaper than going through a university. Doing all three of these courses and 18 months of practical work will earn you the National Diploma in Educare.
