Matric Rewrite
A Matric Rewrite is when students retake their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in one or more subjects to improve their marks.
Who Qualifies For Matric Rewrite?
To qualify for matric rewrite exams, you need to meet specific conditions:
- Missed Exams Due To Valid Reasons
- Close Pass
- Improvement Of One Or Two Subjects
Missed Exams Due To Valid Reasons
If you missed a final matric exam due to illness, death in the family, or another valid reason, and can provide proof (e.g., medical certificate or death certificate).
Close Pass
If you narrowly failed to pass a subject or missed achieving a university entry qualification (Bachelor’s or Diploma pass) by a small margin, you can rewrite to improve your results.
Improvement Of One Or Two Subjects
If you passed but want to improve your marks in one or two subjects to meet university or course requirements.

Entry Requirements
Joining us is simple. There are just a few entry requirements to keep in mind. But don’t stress, our criteria are more flexible than most places. We’re all about making our courses as accessible as we can. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Grade 9 school report or equivalent (ABET at NQF Level 1 with two official languages)
- Incomplete matric result
- Must be 21 years old when writing exams in May/June
How To Choose Your Subjects
Choosing which subjects to rewrite is the easy part. Think about which subjects you failed and also what academic and professional benefits rewriting your matric holds. Keep in mind that you can only rewrite subjects you initially wrote in your matric exam. If you do want to add more subjects you may want to consider a Matric Upgrade.
What Do I Need To Pass Matric?
We know you don’t just want to pass matric, you want to pass with flying colours and make your matric certificate really count! But let’s start with the basics. Here are the minimum requirements:
To pass matric, you need to:
- Get at least 40% in your Home Language
- Achieve at least 40% in two other subjects
- Get at least 30% in four more subjects
- You must pass at least five subjects in total
Once you’ve passed matric, you’ll be awarded the Amended Senior Certificate from Umalusi.
