Is Adult Matric the Same as Normal Matric?
Yes it is! The amended senior certificate you get after completing your course will look exactly the same as those who wrote the NSC exams. And the most important part is that your certificate will also receive its stamp of approval from Umalusi.
Adult Matric Exams
Your final exam is the highlight of your senior certificate journey. So to avoid missing out, it’s important to note that the adult matric exams take place at a different time than the NSC exams. These exams are written during May/June each year.
What do I Need to Pass Matric?
There are three main pass requirements based on the marks you received. These range from a higher certificate pass and diploma pass to a bachelor’s pass. The better your marks, the higher your pass.
We’re sure you don’t just want to pass matric, but you want to pass it well and add real value to your matric certificate. But for now, here are the minimum requirements needed to pass the adult matric course:
To pass matric, you will need to:
- Get at least 40% in your Home Language
- Obtain at least 40% in two other subjects
- Get at least 30% in four other subjects
You need to pass a minimum of five subjects. After passing your matric, you will be awarded with an Amended Senior Certificate from Umalusi.

How to Choose Your Adult Matric Subjects
To register for matric as an adult, you need to have six subjects. Three are compulsory and three will be your choice.
