What are Correspondence Courses?

Correspondence courses are classes that are offered through distance learning. It gives students the chance to learn new skills and further their learning without physically attending an institution. Study material can be sent online or printed and sent via post.

Online Correspondence: This has become the most popular way in which to conduct distance learning. All communication between students and instructors can be done through emails, message boards or study groups. The course and study material are usually available to download or access online.

Print Correspondence: Although online courses are more popular, some institutions still prefer to use printed materials for their correspondence courses. Students usually get textbooks and study guides that can be ordered from the college. Assignments are mailed or faxed, if possible.

Is Correspondence and Distance Learning the Same Thing?

Distance learning and correspondence have many similarities, but there are a few differences between the two.

How it Started

Correspondence learning uses the postal service, with lessons and study material sent by mail. After the internet started to grow, correspondence also began to include email as a method of delivery. While distance learning involves some aspect of correspondence, it also has other online tools. This includes online classrooms, video and study groups.

The Pacing

A big difference between the two forms of study is the pacing of lessons. Correspondence is not in real time. Assignments are sent to students, completed and then returned. Some distance learning assignments are also completed this way, but others are done through online chats or video. Some courses have a specific time in which you need to complete it.

Interactions

Another difference is the level of interaction between students and instructors. Correspondence typically requires little to no interactions. Projects are completed and sent to be marked without any further communication. Distance learning courses, however, rely on a higher level of interaction and have tools that help students over the course of their studies.
