How do I know that a College is Legitimate?
Before you choose a college to study, you must find out if they are one of the good guys. So HOW do you find out if they are going to help you pass your course, or if they are a fly-by-night scam that will rip you off? Is the college legit, or will they waste your time and your money? Will you get your Certificate, or just empty promises?
Check Out Their Reputation
The most important thing to look for, is the reputation of the college where you want to study. If they are well-known, and cheap, that does not tell you how they will treat you. And you want to be SURE how they will TREAT you… before you register.

A good college will be accredited. Accreditation can be with any one of the following bodies:
The Council on Higher Education
QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations)
Any one of the SETAs. Here is a list of all the SETAs https://www.

Colleges offering accredited courses, are now required to Register with the DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training). Colleges have till September 2018 to apply for this Registration. So colleges who are not yet registered, are not “illegal”. They might just be in the process of applying. Once a college has applied for registration, they will have a letter recognising that they have compiled with the requirement to apply.
