Career Questions you Should Have the Answers to

Wouldn’t it be great if you knew exactly what you would be asked during an interview? This is unfortunately not possible. There is, however, a list of commonly asked questions you can use as a guide. Here are some examples of career questions you should have the answers to.

Can you Tell me About Yourself?

This may seem like a simple question, but many people fail to prepare for it. Make sure you keep it brief and highlight your traits that are suited for the specific job.

What are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?

Speaking about your strengths can be fairly easy. Your weaknesses? Not so much. Consider the following when answering these questions.

  • Strengths – Talk about your soft and technical skills. You can also mention your qualities and how they relate to the role you are applying for.
  • Weaknesses – Sharing your weaknesses can show that you are self-aware and want to continue getting better at your job. These qualities can attract employers.

What is Your Greatest Professional Achievement?

Don’t be shy when answering this question. Make sure you pick an achievement that showcases your work ethic and values. If it ties in with the job you are applying for, even better!

Tell me About a Conflict You’ve Faced at Work and how you Dealt With it

This is often used to assess how well you perform under pressure and how good your problem-solving skills are. Be honest and focus more on the resolution instead of the conflict.

Why do you Want to Leave Your Current job?

You might have been let go or you’re simply looking for a more challenging role. Whatever your reason is, make sure you keep it positive and avoid bad-mouthing your current employer.

Describe a Time you Demonstrated Leadership Skills

You don’t need to be in a leadership position to showcase your leadership skills. Think about a time where you took initiative or helped motivate your team to get something done.

How do you Deal With Work Stress?

This may be tricky to answer, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a trick question. Avoid saying that you don’t get stressed out. Rather mention your go-to strategies for dealing with stress.

Why was There a Gap in Your Employment?

Maybe you were dealing with health or family issues, or travelling the world. Regardless of what your reason is, you should be prepared to explain the gap. Keep it brief, but be honest.

Where do you see Yourself in 5 Years?

This question is quite common. Mention the skills you want to develop, types of roles you want to fulfil and things you would like to accomplish.

Why Should we Hire you?

Don’t be intimidated by this question. Simply explain why you think you would be the perfect fit for the role. Make sure you highlight your key skills and experiences.
