What is the Difference Between a Bookkeeper and an Accountant?

To explain it simply, a bookkeeper is a junior accountant, while an accountant is a senior bookkeeper. CIMA Courses

CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting

The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting teaches you more than just accounting skills, it also teaches you key business skills. You can start your journey toward a career in business and finance by learning the basics with this course. The main requirements you need here are being older than 16 and being competent in Mathematics and English.

CIMA Professional Qualification: Operational Level

The CIMA Professional Qualification: Operational Level takes you from just being able to record financial information to reporting and making decisions with financial information. You will need the previous qualification, the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting in order to qualify for this course.

CIMA Professional Qualification: Management Level

This course gives you the skills and knowledge to move up to management level. You will learn how to create a business strategy, put it in use, and report on it. You will need the previous qualification, the CIMA Professional Qualification: Operational Level in order to qualify for this course.

CIMA Professional Qualification: Strategic Level

This is the final level of the CIMA Professional Qualification. You will learn risk management skills such as spotting risks, coming up with a plan to deal with it, and making sure such risks are avoided in future. You will need the previous qualification, the CIMA Professional Qualification: Management Level in order to qualify for this course.

 

The ICB Financial Accounting Programme

The ICB Bookkeeping Programme is made up of four levels:

  • Foundation Level
  • Intermediate Level
  • Upper Intermediate Level
  • Advanced Level

As you complete each level, you will receive an ICB certificate for each course. Every level you study gives you new skills and qualifies you to work in different bookkeeping and accounting positions according to your qualification level.

Foundation Level

ICB National Certificate: Junior Bookkeeper

This certificate is the beginning of our financial accounting programme. This is where you start with bookkeeping and learn the basics. You can get into entry-level jobs like a junior bookkeeper or accounts clerk. This course is really easy to get into as well, no Matric needed! All you need to get into this course a Grade 10 certificate and be 16 years of age.

Intermediate Level

ICB FET Certificate: Bookkeeping (Certified Senior Bookkeeper)

This is the course that takes you from junior to senior. The intermediate level gives you the knowledge you need to get to the next step in your accounting career. You can now apply for jobs like senior bookkeeper and assistant accountant. To do this course you must have completed the ICB National Certificate: Junior Bookkeeper course.

Upper Intermediate Level

ICB National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting

The ICB National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting gives you the skills to move on from bookkeeper to accountant level. You will be qualified for positions such as tax technician and technical financial accountant. To do this course you must have completed the ICB FET Certificate: Bookkeeping (Certified Senior Bookkeeper).

Advanced Level

ICB National Diploma: Financial Accounting

The ICB National Diploma: Certified Financial Accounting course gives you a thorough educational background in accounting. You can use this qualification to apply for some of the most well paid and respected positions in the accounting field. You can apply for jobs such as a financial accountant, management accountant, and tax consultant. To do this course you must have completed the ICB National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting.

Can I Study ICB Bookkeeping Courses if I do not have a Matric Qualification?

Yes, you most certainly can! You can start your tertiary studies without a Matric certificate. The academic level of Matric is NQF level 4, while the ICB beginner level bookkeeping course starts at NQF level 3. The ICB has made their courses available to include students who did not complete school, and who need to study and work at the same time.

How far can you go With a Bookkeeping Course?

You can go really far with a bookkeeping course. You can start out having the skill to perform junior bookkeeper level tasks and eventually progress up to performing financial accounting level tasks. The ICB National Certificate: Junior Bookkeeper allows you to gain entry-level jobs in the accounting sector. While you are gaining experience and making money you can further your education. You will eventually be able to apply for positions such as financial accountant and tax consultant.

The ICB now allows you to go even further and study for a Bachelor of Accounting Degree with Boston College. The entry requirement to qualify is the ICB National Diploma: Financial Accounting.
