After School Options

Your After School Options aren’t as limited as you may think. Students often think that studying  after matric is the best option. But not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to afford it, or qualify for university entrance. Luckily, there are options for everyone.

Study Further

This is often the go-to option, but it’s important to consider what career you would like to pursue first. Your results also determine where and what you will be able to study. If you don’t meet the requirements, you would need to do a bridging course or change your career plan. You can choose to study at one of the following institutions:

  • University – Universities offer a more formal and academic way of learning. Regardless of what your field of study is, you will gain a very broad range of knowledge and skills. You need to have matric and meet the specific course requirements to qualify.
  • Technikon – This is also known as a University of Technology. It allows you the option of choosing a mix of theoretical and practical subjects. This will depend on the career you wish to pursue. Requirements are similar to a university.
  • TVET College – If you want to learn a trade, then studying at a TVET college is the way to go. You will learn trade and craft skills that will qualify you as an artisan. The minimum requirement is grade 9 and you need to be at least 16 years old.
  • Distance Learning Institution – Want to work and study at the same time? Distance learning gives you the chance to do this. You can choose where and when you would like to study, while earning an income. Entrance requirements are also less strict.

Get a Job

Most students who opt not to study often look into getting a part-time or casual job during the December holidays. You may not have any work experience, but most employers are looking for students who are eager and willing to learn. If you are looking for something a little more permanent, there are entry-level jobs available for matriculants as well.

Apply for a Learnership, Apprenticeship or Internship

Wondering what the difference between a learnership, apprenticeship and internship are? All three of these opportunities aim to equip students with valuable workplace experience, but there are slight differences between them.

  • Learnership – These are aimed at students with only a matric certificate. It helps you gain a national qualification without having to attend a formal institution. You also gain skills that are directly related to a specific occupation.
  • Apprenticeship – Apprenticeships are a lot more focused than learnerships. It aims to provide the chance to work alongside someone already in your chosen field. This way you gain experience directly related to your job before you start full time.
  • Internship – An internship will often be the start to an entry-level job. It can be paid or unpaid. The duration can be anywhere from 3 months to a year. It depends on the type of job and what company you work for.

Take a Gap Year

Not every student knows exactly what they would like to do after matric. This is where taking a gap year comes into play. It gives you the chance to explore things besides furthering your studies. This should give you a better idea of what your next step will be.

  • Volunteer – Volunteering is a good way to give back while gaining some experience. There are many organisations that always need volunteers. Consider what your interests are and choose a charity that you can invest your time in.
  • Travel – One of the best ways to spend your gap year is by travelling. It gives you the chance to explore your interests and learn more about yourself. This can be done by travelling locally or overseas.
  • Work Abroad – Combine travel and work by finding a job overseas. Not only will you learn about a new culture, you will also gain work experience and an income. Become an au pair or teach english as a second language.

How do I Decide What to Do?

Making a decision on what to do after high school can be a tricky one. With the amount of options available, you need to consider all possible factors. Take the time to really think about what you want to accomplish in the next few years.

Learn About Yourself

If you can’t decide on a job or industry you would like to work in, consider your interests and strengths. A common way to learn about yourself and possible career choices is to take online self-assessments. You may be surprised at what you learn as some are very detailed.

Research Industries You’re Interested in

Once you know what your personality and preferences are, you should be able to make a list of industries you would like to explore. You could even add specific positions you are interested in. Research all options and weigh the pros and cons of each one.

Find a Mentor

Now that you have a better idea of what industries you want to get into, find a mentor that already has the job you want to do. This can be done through social media, networking events and career expos. Schedule an interview or job shadow them for a day.

Do I Need a Tertiary Qualification to be Successful?

Having a degree is often associated with success. But the truth is, not everyone is made for university or college. While having a degree or diploma comes with it’s fair of benefits, it does not guarantee success. Your success depends on you and you alone, and that can happen with or without a tertiary education
