10 Tips to Create a Matric Study Schedule

Shouldn’t you only create a study schedule close to the exam period? Well not quite. The number one thing to avoid in your matric year is cramming. Your study schedule will help you plan ahead so you can stay ahead. Our 10 tips to create a matric study schedule are:

  1. Write it out
  2. Create a weekly schedule
  3. Prioritise your work
  4. Set out enough time to study each subject
  5. Pick a study time fit for you
  6. Add variety to your schedule
  7. Include assignment dates and deadlines
  8. Be specific
  9. Include breaks and downtime
  10. Review your schedule
  • Write it out

We might live in a digital world, but it’s best to write out your schedule. It’s proven that writing things out will help you remember the information. Putting it up on a wall where you can see it everyday is a great way to help you stick to it.

  • Create a Weekly Schedule

Things change all the time. Your plans for this week may not be the same next week. Creating a weekly schedule gives you a more realistic idea of what to look forward to. Doing so means you’ll be able to study work you’ve just gotten from your teacher. This will help you retain the information.

  • Prioritise Your Work

Consider all your due dates and tests. Add all upcoming deadlines and tests first. Also, if you have assignments that will take a long time to complete, add them higher up in your schedule. It gives you enough time to finish them.

  • Set out Enough Time to Study Each Subject

So you like English more than Maths? That’s okay, but it doesn’t mean you should leave that subject out completely. You need to set out enough time to study all your subjects. If you’re struggling with a module, you can add more study time to this subject.

  • Pick a Study Time fit for you

At times you may need to compromise your work, family and studies. But your study time shouldn’t disrupt your life. You need to take care of your responsibilities too. Add a time slot that suits you and stick to it. This will help you create a routine.

  • Add Variety to Your Schedule

Studying the same thing over and over again can become tedious. Avoid this by adding some variety to your schedule. Split your work between memorising, studying matric past exam papers, doing revisions with memos or doing research on your assignments.

  • Include Assignment Due Dates and Tests

Okay, so you don’t want your schedule to be too cluttered and messy. But add your assignment due dates and tests to your planner. This will help you keep track of your work and will be a constant reminder of what you would like to achieve.

  • Be Specific

Study, and then study some more. It may be a study schedule, but you have to be more specific than that. Be specific of exactly what you would like to complete. This will give you a clear aim of what you would like to achieve in that study session.

  • Include Breaks and Downtime

We want you to do your best. But studying 24/7 will do more harm than good. You need to include breaks in your planner. You don’t even need to call it “break time”. Leave a space open dedicated to what you want to do. This also helps create flexibility in your schedule.

  • Review Your Schedule

Practice makes perfect. And this reigns true in your study schedule. After following your first schedule, you’ll be able to see what works, and doesn’t work for you. You could alter your schedule to add more breaks or include more study time if you are free

Do’s and Don’t When you Create a Matric Study Schedule

Since your work and assignments will constantly change, so will your schedule. This means you’ll be creating a new one each week. But there are a few do’s and don’ts that will stay the same whenever you create a new planner.

Do’s of Creating a Matric Study Schedule:

  • Create goals after each week – This will help you stay excited and motivated to stick to your schedule.
  • Include other activities as well – You can add activities to highlight what you will do besides study each day, e.g, soccer, naps, etc.
  • Look at study planner templates online – Not sure how to structure your schedule? Get help from an online study planner template.
  • Set some time out for social media – No need to put your social life on hold. Set some time aside to enjoy your social media platforms.

Don’ts of Creating a Matric Study Schedule:

  • Do not fill your schedule to the brim – Don’t pack your schedule full of studying time and activities. Leave some space open to allow flexibility in your planner.
  • Avoid studying all day – Studying all day will do more harm than good. Limit your study time to a few hours a day with rest time in between.
  • Don’t set unrealistic expectations – Don’t aim to study a month’s worth of work in a week. Give yourself enough time to study with ease.
